Metalized Window Film
Mid-Range · $7-12/sq ft installed

Strong performance, strong value.

Metalized film delivers excellent heat rejection and proven durability at a price point below ceramic.

Overview

Metalized window film uses a thin metal layer deposited onto the film substrate. The metal layer reflects solar heat effectively, provides good UV protection, and creates a slightly reflective appearance. It offers excellent performance at a lower cost than ceramic.

How it works

Metal particles are sputtered onto the film in a vacuum deposition process, creating a uniform reflective layer. This layer reflects a significant portion of solar radiation, including both visible and infrared. The process is technically demanding. Quality differences between manufacturers are significant. Low-quality metalized films develop a rainbow effect and delaminate within a few years.

Best for
  • Residential installations balancing performance and budget
  • Commercial properties with large glass areas where ceramic cost is prohibitive
  • Applications where a modest reflective appearance is acceptable
  • Buildings without active cell phone or GPS dependence concerns
Trade-offs
  • Metal content may marginally reduce cell phone and GPS signal in some installations
  • Slightly reflective exterior appearance compared to ceramic
  • Some metalized films show a faint metallic tint on the interior — quality varies by manufacturer
Questions

Frequently asked

Will metalized film interfere with my cell phone or Wi-Fi?
High-quality metalized films have minimal signal impact in most residential installations. Lower-quality films with higher metal content can cause noticeable attenuation. This is a greater concern for full commercial buildouts than for residential installs with a few treated windows.
How does metalized film compare to ceramic for heat rejection?
Premium metalized films approach ceramic performance on heat rejection for most residential applications. At maximum heat-rejection specs, ceramic pulls ahead slightly. For moderate exposures, the difference is not perceptible.
Does metalized film look like a mirror?
Quality metalized film has a subtle exterior reflectance that most people describe as similar to Low-E glass. It is not the mirrored appearance of older films. Dark metalized films are more reflective than light ones.
How long does metalized film last?
Quality metalized film lasts 10-15 years. Inferior products delaminate or develop a rainbow effect sooner. SolarGard metalized products carry appropriate warranty coverage.
